Brief history<\/h2>\n

Introduced in 1967 as an item to allow private, physical ownership of gold. The Gold Krugerrand\u00a0is one of the most popular gold coins worldwide. With over 50 million ounces\u2019 worth of gold sold to this day.<\/p>\n

During South Africa\u2019s policy of apartheid from 1948-1994, the Krugerrand was made an illegal import for many western countries. This did not however, impede individuals from investing in them. By the 1970\u2019s, the coin accounted for over 90% of the global gold coin market.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, The Rand Refinery announced the Krugerrand’s 50th<\/sup> anniversary with the first-ever silver version of its most popular bullion coin going into full production for a late 2017 release. Bearing the same design of its gold counterpart, the silver Krugerrand features a small 50th<\/sup>\u00a0privy mark above the springbok on the reverse of the coin to celebrate the special occasion.<\/p>\n

Properties<\/h2>\n

Ever since its debut, the outward aspects of the coin have remained the same. The obverse features the face of Paul Kruger as designed by Otto Schultz in 1984. On the reverse, an elegant springbok (one of the national symbols of south Africa) designed by Coert Steynberg. His initials can be seen above the word gold near the bottom of the coin.<\/p>\n

All gold Krugerrand’s are minted from 22ct gold which is an alloy of copper-gold, otherwise known as Crown Gold, made famous by the British Sovereign<\/a> coins. The alloy consists of one troy ounce of gold (31.1035g) and 2.826g of copper. Which gives the coin a more orange appearance compared to silver-alloyed gold coins.<\/p>\n

Upon closer inspection, a 1 Ounce Gold Krugerrand should have 160 serrations along the edge of the entire coin. The number of serrations will vary depending on the weight and size. You can view a full list of serrations in the table at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n

Gold Krugerrand\u00a0Coins are available in four weights from one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce. The table below outlines the technical specifications of all the sizes.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
