{"id":2253,"date":"2017-09-14T23:33:48","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T22:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ukbullion.com\/blog\/?p=2253"},"modified":"2019-02-21T13:45:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T13:45:47","slug":"brief-history-silver-coins-royal-mint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ukbullion.com\/blog\/brief-history-silver-coins-royal-mint\/","title":{"rendered":"The Brief History of Silver Coins from The Royal Mint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Silver coins have been a benchmark in British currency since Celtic times, and continue their long life to this day in the form of commemorative silver coins from The Royal Mint.<\/p>\n<p>The mint itself was established in the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Century and quickly developed into the central authority for all British coins, and remains so even today. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmintmuseum.org.uk\/collection\/collection-highlights\/coins\/alfred-the-great-penny\/index.html\">From stamping King Alfred the Great&#8217;s face on a hoard of coins in 866<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmint.com\/newonepoundcoin\">redesigning our pound coins and notes in 2017<\/a>, the Royal Mint remains a vital part of the country&#8217;s national heritage.<\/p>\n<h3>The history of silver at The Royal Mint<\/h3>\n<p>Historically, silver coins were the most ubiquitous type of currency, and remained so until <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/1399693\/A-history-of-sterling.html\">Great Britain adopted the Gold Standard in 1717<\/a>. In Anglo-Saxon times, these silver coins, which later came to be referred to as &#8216;sterlings&#8217;, weighed roughly a <em>drachm<\/em> each, 240 of which came together to weigh about a pound. Thus, &#8216;1 pound&#8217; became equivalent to 240 sterlings or pennies \u2013 the imperial money system that continued until the late 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>These original silver coins were of the highest available purity, but as the penny&#8217;s value declined, so too did the purity of the silver.
