The Royal Canadian Mint was initially a branch of the British Royal Mint, based in Ottawa, with its first coin, a 50 cent piece, being minted in 1908. It has since seen many milestones, one of which being the advent of the popular and collectible Maple coin.

Maple Bullion Coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979, initially with a 24 carat purity of 999.0 parts per thousand until 1982 and thereafter a fineness of 999.9 parts per thousand.

In 2007, a 100Kg Gold Maple was minted to a fineness of 999.99, which was the world's largest minted coin until 2011. The Gold content of which would be worth over £2.5m at today's prices.
