Palladium
Palladium is a rare silvery-white precious metal belonging to the platinum group. It is priced mainly by the motor industry rather than by investors, which makes it the most eventful chart on this page: it ran to record highs in 2022 on Russian supply worries, then gave much of that back as carmakers switched to cheaper platinum.

Palladium Price UK
Roughly three-quarters of the world's palladium comes out of just two countries, Russia and South Africa. Supply that concentrated moves on news, and palladium has produced some of the sharpest swings of the four precious metals in recent decades. The chart above tracks the live palladium price per gram, updated every 5 seconds, with historic records reaching back decades.
Palladium Purity and Uses
Palladium belongs to the platinum group metals and is refined to very high purity for bullion use, sharing many working characteristics with its sister metal platinum. Naturally white, strong and resistant to tarnish, it has long been prized in fine jewellery as well as in catalytic converters, electronics and dentistry. If you already hold palladium items, our scrap palladium calculator gives an indicative value before you sell, based on the same live rates shown above.
Why Buy Palladium?
Around 80% of palladium demand comes from automotive catalytic converters, where it reduces harmful emissions in petrol engines. Tightening emissions regulations worldwide have sustained demand, and the metal is also used in electronics, dentistry and hydrogen purification. Our scrap palladium calculator quotes against 500, 950 and 999 fineness metal — the grades UK hallmarking recognises for palladium.
Like silver and platinum, physical palladium is subject to VAT at the standard rate in the UK.
Palladium sits in the same metals group as platinum, and investors often hold both as a diversified industrial-metals allocation alongside gold and silver.
